Aims and Objectives

The Master of Nursing (Advanced Practice) program is intended for registered nurses who wish to prepare themselves for leadership in nursing practice and education. The focus is on clinical practice and the program allows for specialisation in selected areas of nursing, and in-depth study of a selected topic relevant to nursing practice. In particular, the program is designed for registered nurses who wish to practice as clinical nurse specialists, clinical nurse consultants, or clinical nurse educators.

The program requires completion of 80 units and consists of prescribed nursing and elective courses. The program has a clinical practice focus and allows for specialisation in a selected area of nursing. Streams and areas of specialisation are available in Acute Care (including Perioperative, Nephrology, Parenting, Intensive Care, Emergency and Surgical Nursing), Older Person Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Child, Youth and Family Nursing. Students must complete the courses approved for each specialisation to ensure specialisation acknowledgement.

Course Outline
NURS6120 Contemporary Nursing
Provides students with an opportunity to critically examine areas of significance and issues related to contemporary nursing. It includes a critical analysis of the social, historical, political, legal and ethical aspects that impinge on contemporary nursing.
NURS6090 Investigate Methods
This course provides the opportunity for students to gain skills in conducting an evaluation of a systematic review on a topic of your choice related to your current or future clinical practice, and in preparing a protocol for systematic review.
NURS6450 Symptom Management in Clinical Practice
This course examines the pathophysiology, experience, medical management, and nursing assessment and management of symptoms such as pain, nausea and vomiting, anorexia, dysponea and fatigue. It provides students with the opportunity to increase their knowledge of the pathophysiology of common distressing symptoms in patients and to be able to utilize appropriate management strategies to alleviate these symptoms and provide patient comfort. Students will be encouraged to explore aspects of symptom management that are of particular concern to their specialist clinical practice.
NURS6650 Infection Control
This course provides students with an opportunity to advance knowledge and skills in infection prevention and control in clinical practice. Students will be encouraged to explore aspects of infection control that are of particular concern in their specialist clinical practice.
NURS6623 Leadership and Management in Practice
This course assists students to build on their knowledge of leadership/management, and to apply this knowledge to their workplace with an emphasis on skills needed for change management. The course comprises one module with four sections. The module has a series of related activities that enable concurrent learning and application of knowledge to the context of practice. The final assignment provides each student of knowledge to the context of practice. The final assignment provides each student with the opportunity to demonstrate his/her learning through the identification of a plan through which to address key leadership/management issues emerging from his/her workplace.
NURS6624 Leading Change in Practice
This course assists students to review and critique concepts and processes relating to leading change. The course provides students with an opportunity to construct a proposal related to a change process they wish to lead in their work context.
NURS6450 Symptom management

HURS6201 Specialist Applied Pharmacology
To provide students with knowledge of the basic mechanisms underlying drug action and of the mechanisms of action of prescribed drugs that act on the various body systems. It will deal also with the effects of social and abused drugs. The course is designed to allow registered nurses to acquire the additional knowledge and skills necessary to function as nurse practitioners. Skills include ordering medications from an approved formulary and performing limited referrals in accordance with approved clinical guidelines. Other courses in the program will allow students to use this background knowledge in their specialist practice.
NURS6640 Teaching and Learning in the Clinical Context
Explores the role of the clinician as an educator of colleagues. It examines theories of adult teaching and learning and requires students to analyse their practice to identify opportunities for learning and to develop a repertoire of skills appropriate to both planned and opportunistic learning opportunities.
NURS6772 Specialisation Nursing A
Emphasises the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to practice in a range of specialist nursing areas. Specialist areas for study include emergency, intensive care, surgical, nephrology, parenting education and perioperative care. The Competency Standards for the Advanced Practice Nurse (Australian Nursing Federation, 1997) and the relevant specialist competency standards are the frameworks used to guide students in this course.
NURS6773 Specialisation Nursing B
Specialisation Nursing B follows on from Specialisation Nursing A and includes a compulsory clinical practice component.
NURS6771 Professional Development in a Practice Context
Promotes professional development in the specialist nurse through the development of knowledge and skills in reflective practice and critical thinking. Specialist areas for study include emergency, intensive care, surgical, nephrology, parenting education and perioperative.
NURS6250 The Experience of Ageing
In this course students will critically examine the various theories of ageing and common myths associated with growing old. The biological, sociological and psychological aspects of the normal ageing process will be explored. The experience of growing old, from the perspective of the older person, will be examined and will include an analysis of what constitutes successful ageing.
NURS6190 Issues in Aged Care
This program will facilitate the examination of professional, social political, economic, ethico-legal and spiritual issues associated with the care of aged people. Strategies directed towards the promotion of awareness of the needs of the older people experiencing the need for care and the enhancement of care of the aged will be explored.
NURS6711 Palliative Care Practice
This course is designed to facilitate the development of advanced practice in palliative care based on the ?„ompetency Standards for the Advanced Nurse?and the ?µtandards for Palliative Care Provision?
NURS6733 Management of Dementia
Students will examine the cognitive and behavioural changes which are commonly associated with the progressive process of dementia, develop strategies for the effective assessment of these changes and explore ideas and current knowledge of the various approaches to behaviour management. In addition, innovations in community and residential dementia care (diagnosis, assessment and management) will be critically analysed.
NURS6721 Nursing Practicum in Acute Aged Care
This course is designed to facilitate the development of advanced practice in the acute care of the aged care based on the Benner's competency categories and the Standards for Aged Care Facilities.
NURS6030 Counselling 1
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the methods and processes used in counseling and to extend the role of registered nurses in counseling and therapeutic interventions. It has been designed to include theory, demonstration, clinical practice, assessment and critical evaluation.
NURS6051 Disorder and Interventions in Mental Health Nursing
This course meets the educational needs of nurses in relation to post-graduate education in Mental Health Nursing. It is designed for newly registered nurses, general trained nurses and mental health nurses who are returning to mental health nursing after an absence and need to update their knowledge, ie. Nurses who have not had specific recent mental health nursing education. This course covers the are of mental illnesses and treatments.
NURS6190 Issues in Aged Care

NURS6060 Drug & Alcohol Issues in Mental Nursing Practice
The issues associated with substance use and substance abuse treatment are complex. These issues are further complicated by the presence of comorbid mental health conditions. This course will explore the heterogeneity of clients of mental health and substance use services and the specialists skills required to meet the needs of these clients. Particular attention is given to substance misuse among people with mental health problems. Issues of aetiology, assessment and management will be addressed.
NURS6080 Psychiatric Rehabilitation Nursing
Promotes practice development through evidence-based and critical reflection. It is designed to cover the key issues, directions, interventions, and evidence-based practice related to psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery.
NURS6091 Community Mental Health Nursing
The course is premised on the recognition that the distinction between hospital and community is becoming increasingly obscure. New innovations result in short stays in hospital and consumers are remaining in the community instead of being admitted to hospital. But these innovations in service delivery call for the delineation of the nurse's role in terms of their preparation for the changes in health care delivery. The student will examine the concept of the commuity, health promotion, primary prevention, models of practice and the nurse practitioner's role in maintaining the mental health of individuals and society.
NURS6070 Mental Health Nursing of Older People
Mental Health Nursing's individual contribution to the care of older people is its focus on the interaction of physical, psychological, cognitive, behavioural and social stressors, resources and strengths as they affect function, health status and quality of life of individuals and their families. This course uses an incremental model in determining Psychogeriatric nursing content (Hoeffer, 1994) to encompass knowledge and skills from the disciplines of mental health and aged care nursing, psychiatry, psychology, geriatric medicine and pharmacology. Major diagnostic syndromes, clinical assessment and developmental and social issues are emphasized.
NURS6815 Special Care of the Newborn
This course allows students to broaden their understanding and knowledge of the neonate requiring additional health support and treatment. Care may be in an obstetric unit, special care nursery or level 2 section in an intensive care setting. The role of the nurse in assisting the neonate to optimal health is explored, within the context of family centred care.
NURS6813 Families in Society
This course allows students to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the place of families in society. The concept of ?¶he Family?is investigated and critically analsyed with the role families play in the development, education and health of children explored. The course examines the diversity of family structures and factors influencing family life. Questions are asked such as What is a family? What strengths and challenges exist in families? What is the role of health workers in assisting families in times of adversity and distress?
NURS6810 Alterations in Child Health
This course focuses on the nursing care of children and youth who experience difficulty in maintaining optimum health. It addresses general concepts of neonatal, child and youth health nursing practice, as well as the management of clinical problems. Nursing interventions required for both the child and his/her family to function at the best possible level are explored.
NURS6818 Disorders and Interventions in Child & Adolescent Mental Health Nursing
This course is also offered as a stand-alone elective course for students who wish to exit with the Graduate Certificate Nursing (Advanced Practice). Students will explore the serious public health issue of child and adolescent mental health. Students engage with practice based clinical scenarios which assist them to identify the role of the nurse in the assessment, treatment and management of children/adolescents with a mental health disorders. Problem solving skills, the ability to transfer concepts and knowledge to clinical situations and evidence of clinical judgment are expected.
NURS6814 Pregnancy Birth and the Family
This course allows students to broaden their knowledge and understanding of the child bearing woman and her family. It is designed for registered nurses who requires knowledge of pregnancy, birth and the post-natal period, but who do not intend to practice in the field of midwifery. The importance of nurses interacting with women's relationships with their spouse/partner, family members and support networks is explored.
NURS6810 Alterations in Child Health
This course focuses on the nursing care of children and youth who experience difficulty in maintaining optimum health. It addresses general concepts of neonatal, child and youth health nursing practice, as well as the management of clinical problems. Nursing interventions required for both the child and his/her family to function at the best possible level are explored.
