Aims and Objectives

The Aviation Management programs were developed in response to industry need and provide you with an ideal combination of professional and management education. It prepares you to be an effective manager, as well as upgrading your aviation industry skills. Whether you are striving to advance in your organization or seeking other options within the industry, the combination of topics from aviation human factors and management is relevant. And the program can be adapted to fit your interests, regardless of where in the industry you are currently employed. We encourage enrolments from flight crew, cabin crew, ground crew, administration, military and government authorities.

Students are required to take a total of 8 units. Core studies include 4 units in Aviation studies. Elective choices of 4 units can be chosen from 11 courses offered to MBA students.

Course Outline
AVIA6110 Human Factors in Aviation Systems

The module covers a review of basic human factors principles and discussion of more advanced topics such as the implications of cockpit automation and ergonomics in cockpit and display design. The theoretical bases for system safety analysis, application in accident prevention and investigation, and implications for aviation management will also be discussed in detail.


AVIA6120 Crew Resource Management

The module promotes a deep understanding of the content of typical Crew Resource Management (CRM) modules by exploring the scientific research in key concept areas, including communication, leadership, decision making, situational awareness and conflict resolution. Issues in CRM programme development, implementation, evaluation and regulation are addressed and students are provided with the theoretical knowledge base to facilitate design and evaluation of CRM programmes.



AVIA6130 Advanced Human Factors in Aviation Systems

The students are introduced to aspects of methodology in research and are expected to complete a detailed study and critique of a number of recent, applied papers in the aviation human factors domain. In addition they are expected to select one specific topic area and produce a position paper to demonstrate their mastery of the module matter in that area.WEBA611 - Human Factors in Aviation Systems is a pre requisite for this course.

AVIA6140 Human Factors in Specialised Operations

Students are expected to identify and carry out an applied human factors, work related research project or organisational analysis, under supervision, producing a detailed literature survey, methodological approach paper and a comprehensive result and discussion paper. The outcome of this work should be implementation ready at their place of work. WEBA613 - Advanced Human Factors in Aviation Systems is a pre requisite for this course.


GSBS6200 Accounting and Financial Management

Provides an understanding of the main accounting concepts and the practical use of accounting and financial information for decision making and the achievement of business goals. Students are exposed to a variety of topics including accounting for business transactions, calculation of profit, accounting for business assets, linking financial measurement and performance, analysis and interpretation of accounting information, cost concepts, working capital management, the budget process and issues in financial planning. This subject is a broad-based introduction to accounting and financial management for non-accountants. Full module outline


GSBS6020 Management & Organisational Behaviour

Introduces students to the nature of human behaviour at work. It is divided into three parts: individual behaviour, group processes and organisational processes. As a prescribed course in the MBA, it provides students with learning skills required in other courses such as writing and presentation, critical analysis and argument and group work skills .


GSBS6010 Foundations of Marketing Theory

Adopts a strategic market management framework to review key issues such as market segmentation, consumer behaviour, competitor analysis, pricing strategy, channels of distribution and product promotion. Domestic and international case studies are used, and the opportunity is provided to apply the concepts to work situations through the use of progressive assignment


STAT6100 Total Quality Management

TQM is an approach for management and employees to be involved in the continuous improvement in the production of goods and services. Students who complete this module will be able to critically appraise Management (including TQM) Techniques, choose appropriate statistical techniques for improving processes and write reports to management describing processes and recommending ways to improve them. It is also expected that students will develop research skills that will allow them to keep abreast of changes in the field of Total Quality Management after they have completed the module.


GSBS6111 Services Marketing Management

This course addresses the distinct needs and problems of service organisations, both in relation to consumer and business markets, in the domestic, international and global perspectives. Main areas covered include the nature of services and consumer involvement is service processes, relationships and consumer behaviour, STP analysis, the marketing mix and strategy and planning (including loyalty, customer service, customer complaints and service recovery.


GSBS6130 Corporate Finance

Provides an introduction to corporate financial theory and application of theory to problems relevant to managers and is designed as a core module in the Master of Business Administration. Topics covered will include: specification of corporate objectives, evaluation of investment projects, alternative sources of finance, risk, the operation of capital markets, the financing decision, the dividend decision, and the cost of capital.


GECO6410 Economics of Competitive Advantage

Develops competency in business decision-making and critical economic analysis of current practices; facilitates the maturation of judgment and decision-making in relation to business decision-making, through independent reflection and group discussion; and develops managerial competency through research, investigation, economic analysis, enquiry, evaluation and exposition


GSBS6040 Human Resource Management

This module aims to develop a critical understanding of the role and functions of the various personnel/human resource activities in an organisational and societal context. The module provides students with a comprehensive review of essential human resource management concepts, techniques, and issues. These include: how to forecast human resource needs; how to recruit and select employees; how to appraise employee performance, how to evaluate jobs for the purpose of establishing pay plans. In addition, the module also exposes students to the more emerging/contemporary issues including, the causes and cures of absenteeism & turnovers, downsizing, cooperative/participative H.R systems (self-managed work-teams, Quality Circles, T.Q.M, HR Benchmarking), the human resource context of Information Systems. The teaching approach combines formal lectures, interactive class debates, case studies and experiential exercises.


GSBS6021 Consumer Decision-Making & Behaviour

This course builds on the more general requisite marketing concepts by introducing students to the most current principles, advanced concepts and practices of consumer behaviour.


GEBU6490 eBusiness for Managers

The module begins by considering exactly what eBusiness is and reviewing its past development. Several conceptual definitions of eBusiness are introduced and explored. The relationships between eBusiness and "traditional" business and commerce are discussed in the light of these models. The module primarily focuses on the business aspects of eBusiness, not on technical issues. Student will need to have a good understanding of the underpinning technical infrastructure that supports eBusiness and to that end developments in Information Technology during the past fifty years are considered. Particular attention will be paid to the Internet, the World Wide Web and the move to distributed computing platforms. Student will consider several major types of eBusiness in detail; particularly Electronic Data Interchange, Electronic Markets and Internet Commerce. eBusiness is also about effective and efficient communication. Student will consider the ways in which individual, group and organisational communication can be facilitated using emerging communication technology. Finally, student will consider the strategic implications and likely long term impacts of eBusiness. Issues considered will include emerging business models, globalization and internationalization and the "knowledge economy".



GEBU6010 Management Information Systems

The module seeks to provide a foundation for understanding information systems in the context of today's business environment, and to impart those skills necessary for solving a wide range of information-based problems.(Please Note: Students need access to the following software to complete this module - MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access)


GSBS6503 Project Management

This module develops the technical, organisational and personal skills needed to manage complex projects in unstable, changeable environments. The emphasis is on achieving objectives while coping with the unexpected. Topics include: integration of project management with organisational strategy, project management structures, leadership and team selection and building, conflict management, project initiation, project management tools and techniques, resource scheduling and risk assessment, progress and performance measurement, and evaluation, project audit and closure.

16 months for Master; 8 months for Graduate Certificate

Assessment
This program will be assessed by Assignments, Discussions and Examinations. Weighting among 3 components varies with subjects.
